  • [01 January 2007] Happy New Year to all Libretto owners!
The Libretto turns eleven (11) years old on 17 April 2007. The original Libretto 20 was released 17 April 1996.

  • [22 January] Added links to the limited edition L3 Libretto available only in Japan. Added L3 Libretto information to the specifications.

Ebay is a good place to buy 10-40GB hard drives for the Libretto. eg. I was able to buy the 20GB Hitachi 9.5mm HD for only $75!

Those buying >8.4GB HDs should know that if you're not running Win2K/NT or Linux, you need to use a HD disk manager program as well to see the entire HD. This is due to a 8.4GB limit in the Libretto BIOS for models <=L110. IBM HDs provide this free at www.storage.ibm.com, otherwise, use any copy of Western Digital EZ-Drive 9.09W (temporarily available here.) which installs EZ-BIOS 9.06 onto any HD to let the Libretto see >8.4GB.

Ebay is also a good place to buy older CD-RW drives that work in DOS as a regular CD-ROM drive. Such drives include the HP M820E and Ricoh MP8040SE CD-RW 4x4x20 drives (both are identical except for color and brand, both made by Ricoh). You can find them selling for $70-100. With proper drivers, you can run them in DOS as regular CD-ROM drives.

  • [18 November] Limited production Libretto M3 ( specifications ) available in Japan from NTT DoCoMo.
133Mhz MMX, L50/60/70 size, but with only 1 32-bit PCMCIA Type II slot on the left side! (vs. right side for L50-70), 32MB EDO RAM (expandable to 96MB!), 256KB cache!, 6.1" TFT screen, 14.5mm keyspacing, extended battery included, USB floppy drive, L100 power connector plug, ACPI/APM BIOS, Fast IRDA port, Windows 98, and rated for 4.2 hours of run-time with the extended battery. Uses Intel Mobile Pentium 166Mhz 0.25 micron, TT 166 SL2N6, and can be overclocked - the board allows 166 - 266Mhz (at 66Mhz bus frequency) and 300 (at 75Mhz bus frequency). The motherboard is similar to that used by the Libretto 1000, but is not identical by any means.
  • Touch-screen Libretto
http://member.nifty.ne.jp/hirai/lib50m.html (obsolete) This site used to have pictures of a L50M, part #PA1243CM, serial #87046696. These are touch-screen Libretto 50 laptops custom-made for an insurance company in Japan for their use. They've now discontinued use of these touch-screen Librettos, and some can be found on sale online and on Yahoo! Auctions for a decent price (~$100-250 USD).

  • [11 June 2003] T-Mobile USA announces the availablility of their new $29.99 / month 24/7 unlimited wireless (cellular) internet plan. When used with the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750, a Type II PCMCIA card, any Libretto can now go online, surf the internet, get email, trade stocks, etc. anywhere in the USA where one has T-Mobile cell coverage! (Yes, even in the bathroom!) Both Verizon and Sprint offer similar services, but at higher rates of about $80 / month. Highly recommended for anyone who desires mobile internet access cheap!

  • [13 June] The Libertto can now boast the distinction of being one of the world's smallest, if not the smallest, Macintosh! Here's an example of the Libretto 110CT running Mac OS 8.0 on the Basilisk II open source Macintosh emulator. Happily, you can multi-task and run the emulator in a window instead of full-screen if you so desire. Basilisk easily installs in moments and accepts installs of the OS from CD-ROM, floppy and downloaded image files. You can run most programs that run under OS 8.1 or lower, including PC emulators. Internet access can be setup as well for web browsing within the Basilisk emulator (see Basilisk manual).

      Overview

Sightings
The Libretto has been seen in these shows.

  • If you're lucky enough to be near a Japanese video rental store, or receive TV broadcasts of the TBS drama "Who Do You Think You Are?" (Nanisama!), you can see the Libretto 1000 superslim series in action! The gal, Izumi, carries one to collect data for a food sampling session with kids in class in episode 8.
  • 7 Days, broadcast on UPN Channel 13 in Los Angeles, shows a Libretto in use by the scientist in wheelchair.
  • Dark Angel, a TV action show by James Cameron, has shown the Libretto 100/110 in use by a person in wheelchair in several episodes.
  • A Libretto has been spotted in the TV show, Earth - The Final Conflict, on a courtroom bench. Another Libretto 70 was used by a resistance scientist fighting to hack into the interdimensional portal control system in the fight against the Talons.
  • A Libretto 50/70 was frequently used by Angela Bennett in the TV series, The Net.
  • In Brazil, the Libretto 50/70 appeared often on the new program, Jornal Hoje, on TV Globo.
  • The Libretto has made many appearances on the BBC programme (U.K. TV) "Bugs", a high-tech TV show covering many gadgets such as the Libretto. They even kept up to date with the latest Libretto release as the show went through successive seasons.
  • A Libretto was sighted on the TV series, Total Recal 2070.
  • (An interesting Libretto sighting not on TV) At the Millennium Dome in London, which opened 1/1/2000, at the entry gates, each operator has a Libretto 100CT (running NT), connected to a central processor, to issue tickets, passes, etc. There are about 50 gates, so 50 Librettos are getting looked at by about 12,000 people each day!
